Moving to Pukatawagan to teach at Sakastew School?

Thinking about moving to Pukatawagan to become a member of Sakastew School’s Education team?

If you've just accepted a job with Sakastew School, you've probably already Googled "Pukatawagan" and realized it's in Northern Manitoba and is isolated...which means there is no direct road access except when the winter road is open. With that being said...

How do I get to Puk? From Winnipeg…

  • The cheapest way to get to The Pas (as far as the bus will take you towards Puk)  is the Greyhound. The Greyhound station is located conveniently at the Winnipeg Airport. The bus will arrive in The Pas in the early morning.

  • You will need to phone for a taxi or arrange a ride to the train or to Missinipi Airport (the plane that flies into Puk).

  • The train into Puk only departs The Pas on Monday and Thursdays.

  • The plane flies twice daily (allowed baggage is 40lbs without a fee)

*If you have a vehicle and plan on driving, you can park it at Missinipi Airways in The Pas until the winter road is open, and then you can drive it into Puk (the portages are sometimes rough, so this is advised for a vehicle with 4x4 or a larger vehicle; not recommended for a car)

A list of some suggested items to bring to adapt to the North:

  • Rubber boots (there is a lot of mud!)

  • Winter clothing (sometimes it gets as cold as -40!)

  • Outdoor activity gear (skis if you have them, snowshoes, fishing rod, etc..)

A list of some suggested items to bring for your house:

  • your own bedding

  • dishes/cutlery

  • a telephone if you plan on getting phone services hooked up

  • a garbage can

  • towels and toiletry

  • anything else you’d like to make your house a home

All teacherages are furnished with beds, couches, tables and chairs, a TV and stand.

Wondering what Pukatawagan has to offer as far as convenient services?

  • The Northern Store (Convenience Store) - sells everything from gas, food, clothing, to dish wear and treats

  • Candy shoppes: there are a variety of in-home candy stores from Crow Rock all the way to Neya.

Activities in Pukatawagan

  • Fishing

  • Hunting

  • Snowmobiling

  • Skiing

  • Hiking

  • Swimming

  • Winter Games - a variety of different events such as poker tournaments, snowshoe races, and plenty more events!

  • Fundraising events- such as Rummage Sales, Bingos, Christmas Concerts, etc.

  • There are plenty more things to do...just wait until you get here!

How do I get food if there is only one store?

  • TRAIN: IGA and THE GRUB BOX both ship to Puk via the train (Monday and Thursday), you can email a grocery order to them (must include your name, credit card number/ expiry date, your grocery list, and when you’d like it shipped) you will need to find a ride to the train to pick up your groceries when they do arrive (or pay someone else to pick them up)

  • WINTER ROAD: When the winter road is open, you can drive to The Pas, Flin Flon, or anywhere else and pick up your groceries

How do I keep in touch with my friends/family if there is no cellphone reception?

  • MTS does install house phones

  • The school does have internet (or someone in your Teacherage might have their own they are willing to share)

  • Post mail (your new address will be P.O Box 319 Pukatwagan, Manitoba R0B1G0)

Tips from new staff members:

  • Make a food order for the day you'll be arriving (the train arrives in Pukatawagan Mondays and Thursdays)

  • Disconnect your cellphone (there is no cellphone reception)

  • Call and arrange a phone installation with MTS for the day you'll be arriving or shortly after your arrival

  • If you are getting Cable or Satellite, contact someone in The Pas about getting it sent on the train
